Since Simon's first one-man exhibition at the Goodman-Wolman Gallery in 1975 his work has highlighted the mystical aspect of man's journey. His earlier often dreamlike approach has been supplanted by a starker appraisal of said journey, less emphasis on man's relationship with nature and more focus on the traction the traveler finds within. That Simon retains his harmonic palette and that lyrical quality of yore lends these works an allure seemingly in conflict with bleak vistas inhabited by empty railway stations and tracks stretching to infinity. The regular inclusion of a church in less than salubrious setting similarly becomes not what convention might dictate but symbolic of an inner reconciliation sans external prompt. This celebration of the inner or what others term the spirit is essentially what Simon's work is about : the stationary traveler; thus his current exhibition at the Irma Stern Museum is titled 'The journey as destination'.
