Irma Stern - The Collector

The home created by Irma is full of artifacts she collected on her numerous trips to Europe and various journeys in Africa.

The highlight of the African collection is the Buli stool, possibly acquired by the artist before 1935. Experts agree it was probably carved in the early 20th century by a master craftsman in the Congo, known as the Master of Buli.

Various collections assembled by Irma create an extraordinarly rich and highly individual domestic environment which reflect the artist's interests and tastes. The furniture, ceramics and textiles from many parts of the world including Europe, Africa and the East are not confined to a particular period. Instead artifacts date from classical and medieval times to those designed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Irma's zest for life expressed in her love of abundant colour is evident everywhere in each of the rooms in which she lived, worked and enjoyed entertaining. Visitors to the museum can experience this uniquely furnished interior when viewing the sitting room, dining room and studio retained in the manner left by the artist.
